There are heart-healthy meals. You might even eat foods because they support a healthy brain. But have you ever prepared a meal for colon health?

If you have, you’re going to love the recipes we’re about to share.

If you haven’t, it might be time to prepare that meal. Oh, and we’ve got three delicious recipes below you are going to love.

You see, colon health plays a significant role in your overall wellness. It absorbs any remaining nutrients from your food. Waste from digestion collects in the colon on its way out of the body. Your colon also regulates water balance in your body. And these effects go far beyond bowel health – they extend to your mental and emotional health through what scientists call the gut-brain connection.

This is where cleansing becomes important. A safe, properly executed colon cleanse prevents waste build-up, keeps you regular, supports digestion and a healthy colon, and improves your overall health.

Benefits of a Healthy Colon

When you have a healthy colon, you have regular and smooth bowel movements – which varies from person to person from once or twice daily or once every few days. In fact, a common sign of an unhealthy colon is poor elimination patterns or constipation.

Other indicators of colon health include:

  • More or less regular intervals between bowel movements
  • Bowel movement at approximately the same time every morning
  • No straining when eliminating stools
  • Soft, tube-shaped, and well-formed stools
  • No mucous or partially digested food remnants or blood present in the stool
  • Mild-smelling breath
  • Blemish-free skin

And a healthy colon contributes to:

  • Improved digestion and nutrient absorption.
  • Regular bowel movements and relieves constipation.
  • Better blood circulation and higher energy levels.
  • Enhanced alertness and a better mood.
  • Weight loss efforts.
  • A lower risk of colorectal cancer.

Overall good health.

How does colon cleansing help?

The modern diet lacks the essential and beneficial fiber, probiotics, and water needed to maintain colon health.

Worse, a lot of food contains contaminants and toxins that are bad for digestion and your body. A lifestyle deficient in regular physical activity and good-quality sleep can also increase your risk for digestive issues.

When you do not efficiently and regularly pass waste, it can build-up (making you constipated). This can lead to a toxic environment in the colon, infection, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic illness, and even cancer if left untreated. In fact, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer among Americans (both men and women) and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths.

Maintaining colon health is crucial to enjoying excellent overall health. Doing a colon cleanse and eating foods that support your colon are two of the most effective ways to keep this vital organ working at optimal efficiency.

Is a colon cleanse the same as a detox?

A colon cleanse does remove potential toxins from your body and can be part of a detox. It is, however, not a full detox.

A full detox aims to remove toxins from everywhere throughout your body, such as toxin build-up in your cells. A colon cleanse simply seeks to remove any excess waste that has built-up.

Colon cleansing helps your body detox by supporting the natural removal of wastes. This is especially important if your diet includes processed foods and fast foods severely lacking in fiber and other essential nutrients. These foods increase the risk of waste build-up in your body, frequent constipation, and potentially contribute to disease.

Fortunately, colon cleansing can be simple, safe, and done right at home. Popular ways to cleanse include:

  • This involves drinking detox juices together with meals or to replace meals.
  • Fasting. Going on at least a 24-hour fast has been shown to improve digestive health, cardiovascular health, and cognitive function.
  • Taking probiotics to boost gut health and improve digestion.
  • Drinking a laxative tea to help flush out toxins and encourage regular bowel movements.
  • Taking dietary supplements or colon cleanse pills like Cleanse Infused Plus, which is specially formulated to promote colon health.

And, of course, colon cleansing soups.

What does a colon cleanse detox soup do?

A colon cleanse detox soup combines natural ingredients, seasonings, and water to stimulate waste removal from the colon. A good detox soup contains lots of fiber from vegetables. It should also provide plenty of protein, calories, and other essential nutrients. The combination of fiber, water, and plant nutrients helps relieve constipation, promote weight loss, increase energy, improve mood, improve complexion, and promote digestive health.

The high fiber and water content make a detox soup diet relatively easy to adopt, whether the soups replace all meals for several days or are combined with small, healthy meals. And detox soups can be quite flavorful, delicious, and nutritious, so it won’t feel like you’re depriving yourself while you’re on a colon cleanse diet.

Detox soup recipes

A healthy detox soup should include ingredients that are known to be beneficial for the colon. As long as your soup has some of these ingredients, you can easily mix-and-match to your taste.

Key detox soup ingredients:

  • Cabbage, beans, lentils, Brussel sprouts, and other high-fiber vegetables
  • Quinoa, oatmeal, and other high-fiber grains
  • Tomatoes, lettuce, celery, and other vegetables with a high water content
  • Fermented foods, such as kimchi and miso, for their probiotics
  • Herbs and spices with detox properties such as cilantro, ginger, and turmeric; they also add flavor.

Here are three nutritious detox soup recipes you can try!

Detox Cabbage Soup

A comforting soup, this recipe is flavorful and filling while being light in calories and a great detox aid for your colon. In addition to having a high-fiber content, cabbage also has diuretic properties, which will improve your body’s ability to eliminate excess liquid and toxins.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, finely chopped
  • ½ cup onion, chopped
  • ½ cup celery, diced
  • ¼ cup carrots, chopped
  • 1 and ½ cups cabbage, chopped
  • ¼ cup bell peppers, diced (swap with jalapenos for a bit more kick)
  • 1 cup tomatoes, diced
  • 1 ½ teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups vegetable stock
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 8-10 fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon chili flakes
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • Parsley, chopped

Instructions:

  1. In a large saucepan, heat the oil in medium-high heat.
  2. Sauté the garlic and ginger until fragrant.
  3. Add the onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  4. Add the celery, carrots, cabbage, and bell peppers and cook for another 4 minutes, stirring constantly.
  5. Add the tomatoes, salt, and stock, and cover.
  6. Bring the soup to a boil.
  7. Reduce the heat to low, and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  8. Mix in the oregano, basil, chili flakes, and pepper, and stir well.

Optional: garnish with parsley when serving.

Hearty Vegetable Soup

This detox soup packs a powerful one-two punch in terms of flavor and nutrition. It’s vibrant and rich in texture, and it will satisfy you in more ways than one – from your taste buds to your colon.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups vegetable broth plus 2 cups water (or 6 cups water)
  • ¼ cup red onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 celery stalks, diced
  • 3 medium carrots, diced
  • 1 to 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 cup tomatoes, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 2 cups kale leaves, shredded
  • 1 cup purple cabbage, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ⅛ cup fresh lemon juice
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Cayenne pepper, to taste (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large pot, toss together all the vegetables except for the kale and cabbage.
  2. Pour in the vegetable broth and water (or just plain water).
  3. Cook in medium-high heat and let it simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add the turmeric and cinnamon and mix well.
  5. Add salt and pepper to taste (plus cayenne pepper if you want your soup a bit spicy).
  6. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat to low.
  7. Let it simmer for 10 to 15 more minutes, or until the vegetables have softened a little.
  8. Add the kale, cabbage, and lemon juice.
  9. Cook for another 3 minutes.
  10. Remove from heat and serve.

Healing Ginger and Turmeric Soup

The great thing about this detox soup is that with ginger and turmeric as the base ingredients, you can play around with it and use different vegetables for different meals. Simply prepare a big batch of the ginger and turmeric soup base to make several servings. The combination of ginger and turmeric already makes this detox soup potent as a colon cleanser, as well as extremely tasty.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 leek stem, sliced
  • 1 cup fennel, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 3 cups vegetable broth
  • 14 ounces light coconut milk
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil and then sauté the garlic and ginger until fragrant.
  2. Toss in the leek and fennel and sauté for 5 minutes.
  3. Add the broth, coconut milk, and turmeric, stir well.
  4. Cover the pan and bring the mixture to a boil.
  5. Lower the heat and simmer the soup base for 15 to 20 minutes.
  6. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Transfer the soup base into a clean container and let it cool.
  8. Cover with an airtight lid and keep in the fridge, or divide it into 2 to 4 servings in separate containers.

When you’re ready to use the soup base:

  1. Dice your preferred vegetable, such as carrots or butternut squash, or both.
  2. You’ll need about ¾ to 1 cup of veggie/s per serving of the soup base.
  3. Heat up the vegetable/s and soup base in a shallow pan and bring to a boil.
  4. Once boiling, turn the heat down to simmer until the vegetable/s have softened.
  5. Remove from heat and transfer into a blender.
  6. Blend the soup until it’s creamy.
  7. You can serve this with a dash of chili flakes and freshly diced parsley.

Other ingredient options you can use with this detox soup base are onions (to make your own version of onion soup), tomatoes, beans, or chickpeas.

One note on cleansing:

Whatever method of colon cleansing you choose, start slowly and observe how your body responds. If you have an underlying health condition or take medications or other supplements, consult your doctor before starting any cleanse or detox program. And a regular colon cleansing routine at home should also not replace regular colon screenings with your doctor.
